The aim of the Programme is to attract currently inactive girls to take part in a physical activity and health programme within their Primary School/Secondary School. This programme will also help to achieve your 'Health Promoting School Award' and your School is implementing Integrated Services.
This programme could also involve a female relative/guardian from their family. The programme will provide activities that are suitable for both adults and children to take part in together. As the week's progress it is hoped that through participating in these activities will help to develop stronger relationships and also encourage a more positive attitude towards physical activity for all age groups involved.

Each school will be assigned one Funcise Instructor and a member of staff from the school should attend the session. School staff will take responsible for register, and then Funcise instructor will deliver session. When the session is a physical one we insist that all Children have proper foot wear. There will be a short break during the session for the children to have water (they must bring their own). After session has finished School staff will take responsibility for all Children leaving the premises safe with parents/guardians or going back to Out-Of-School Care. This is not the responsibility of Funcise.

You can choose a different activity each session or the same activity over how many sessions you want. These sessions can be delivered in School time, After School or Evening.
Why choose a Girl's Programme?
Encouraging girls to participate in sport/physical activity is one of the key areas of work for the Active School Initiative.
Through evidence stated below by SportScotland it is apparent that if girls take up physical activity at an early age they are more likely to continue this into adulthood.
Main Barriers for girls participation in Physical Activity and sport
· Body Image
· Feeling self conscious
· Lack of confidence
· Lack of suitable activities
· The activities on offer are too competitive
· The venues and facilities are off putting
· Feeling on display in mixed sex activities
· Being teased and feel inadequate due to boys comments
· Sport seen as a masculine activity
· Lack of Time
Why do we need girls to be active
· Active girls are more likely to become active women
· 43% of Scottish women do no physical activity at all
· Active women are less likely to develop osteoporosis
· 1-3 hours exercise per week can reduce the risk of breast cancer 20-30% and 4 hours or more exercise per week show reduction rates as high as 60%
· Women who are overweight and obese but do physical activity are less likely to die premat-urely due to heart problems and lung disease than those who are slim and do no exercise
· Girls who are physically active are less likely to smoke
· Physically active girls less likely to have an unwanted pregnancy
· 50% of girls who take part in physical activity have higher than average levels of self esteem |
